Time Warner Cable flirting with programmable TV |
… an on-screen digital navigation tool that will let television networks point viewers to sister stations or to new services such as video on demand. Using the new tool, viewers can click on a pull-down menu during live broadcasts to channel surf to any number of a particular network’s sister properties. A pull-down menu on CNN would point to CNN Headline News or even CNN on-demand.
Though this isn’t really programmable TV, it’s a step in the right direction.
I think it would be a wise move for Cable operators to actually have entire stations made up of on-demand content. The days of programming everything on the network schedules are growin increasingly dated. Sporting events and live events like sports are about the only reasons left to have scheduled content, IMO. The internet and PVRs continue to change the rest of the scheduled content attractiveness.
