1 in 3 Toys ‘R Us stores might be closing soon |
Seven months ago, after listening to an NPR broadcast, I wrote about Toys R Us financial woes saying:
They have a pretty good new (and older) video game selection and their prices aren’t too bad, but yes you can get most titles cheaper elsewhere. I must admit that when I’m thinking of buying a new video game I don’t think of going to Toys ‘R Us.
Unfortunately, it seems that things haven’t improved and now CNN is reporting that if a pending real estate deal goes through approximately a third of the stores will be closing: Check if your Toys ‘R’ Us might be closing soon
“A third is a reasonable number to expect, especially since one of the buyers in this sale is a well-known real estate trust company, ” said Faith Consolo, chairman of the retail leasing and sales division of Prudential Douglas and Elliman. Those at risk of closing are older stores that need renovation, stores in less visible, off-mall locations, and most importantly, stores with poor sales.
The picture of the Toys ‘R Us Giraffe in that article — sad that I don’t even know (his?) name — is especially sad. I grew up looking forward to Toys ‘R Us trips and our kids did to some degree as well. Looks like their children might not have the same tradition.
Did this post make you go hmm?
