Google ‘Marks’ another employee blog 404

default — by TDavid @ 5:26 pm PST

When are some Google employees named Mark that blog going to stop taking a dump where they eat? First, there was Mark Jen and now Mark Lucovsky creating a stir at none other than: blogspot. Memo to new Google employees: blogspot is part of blogger which is owned by Google.

Lucovsky was formerly a Microsoft engineer and he indicated on his blogspot blog that he was now working for Google. During a recent blogspot blog post, Lucovsky criticized Microsoft’s ability to ship projects swiftly which garnered some attention from Microsoft Watch reporter Mary Jo Foley:

One of Microsoft’s key Windows architects has defected to Google. But at least so far, no one is talking about what Marc Lucovsky’s new role will be at one of Microsoft’s major rivals. A 16-year Microsoft veteran, Lucovsky was one of a handful of “Distinguished Engineers” at Microsoft. He is credited as one of the core dozen engineers that came from Digital Equipment Corp. to Microsoft and built the Windows NT operating system.

A couple days after Lucovsky’s blogspot blogging has been noticed, Dave Winer reports that it’s gone 404 (update: later the same day Lucovsky’s blog returned):

Lucovsky shouldn’t have trashed his former employer in a Google-owned space. But you don’t pull the site because of that. You learn, grow, show your mistakes, do it better next time.

Lucovsky, unlike Jen, wasn’t bashing Google, but by bashing their competitor on a Google-owned service that must have caused some internal memos to take flight. My guess is that just like in Jen’s case it was Lucovsky who took down the blog and we’ll hear in the near future that “he didn’t think his personal opinion would cause a ruckus” — that’s just a guess.

Google needs to stop counting the money long enough to write a freaking company blogging policy. And if you are a Google employee for pete’s sake people, have the intelligence enough to get your own domain and own hosting! Contact me if you need help and I’ll point you to a couple good hosts. Maybe I should become a hosting consultant and work the Google campus for leads!

Update: Lucovsky explains the mysterious outage:

Sorry about my blog being down. Looks like someone actually read it… Oh yeah, and Google had absolutely nothing to do with my Blog being down. I took it down, on my own, so that I could shut down the inbound email comment stream.

Mark then goes on to say that his inbox was so full related to his blog entry that he had to shut the flow down by taking his blog down so he could “concentrate on his day job.” Huh? How about just putting the non-work mail in the “to-do later” stack, get your work done, and then respond? Here’s a new one: enable commenting on the blog. Taking the blog down, though, sure seems like a rather extreme action for stemming an email flow. That odd explanation aside, I knew it was going to go something like this!
