Seattle / Bainbridge Island Ferry WiFi via Mobilisa

travel — by TDavid @ 2:43 pm PST

Last weekend my wife and I took a trip to one of our favorite places in Seattle: the Bainbridge Island ferry. We like to stop at Ivars (#3 pictured above arrow) first and load up on the good fish (well, I do, Kara gets the chicken). The WiFi access provided via Mobilisa worked great at port and a little ways out into the water via my Tablet PC (#2). See the picture above for a distant view of the Space Needle (#1). We learned from the Ferry Schedule that this was part of a Federal research grant:

This service is provided as part of a research grant by the Federal Department of Transportation and the Washington State Ferries. This network is the largest Wi-Fi experiment for passenger systems in the nation. Free wireless service is offered at least through 30 April 2005. WSF reserves the right to charge a competitive fee for this service in the future.

We think that’s a great use of tax dollars: free WiFi while waiting for the ferry and riding the ferry (to a point, anyway). The hotspot went cold after we got out into the water a fair distance, but it was solid while at port. If you get to Seattle, you have to go check out the great fish at Ivars and then ride across the ferry; it’s well worth the $20 for two people (and a car).

UPDATE: we went yesterday (2/12/2005) too.
