Now GPS enabled |

Last night we bought the GPS for Streets & Trips 2005 ($129.95 USD). I’ve connected it to the Tablet PC but it seems like it’s having a hard time finding a signal so far. We’re heading out to the store now so I’m going to take along in the car and try and plot the trip. Any gurus out there that can share their favorite GPS tips and tricks?
Did this post make you go hmm?

…if you can call this a tip, my colleague Steve Lamb (http://blogs.msdn.com/steve_lamb) bought one when we were over at an internal Microsoft conference three weeks ago. On the last afternoon, we had to do a fair bit of driving, and although the GPS receiver was a bit suspect - it kept losing signal - there’s nothing like operator error. We drove around 15 miles attempting to get round a blockage on an interstate using Streets and Trips to navigate us. Steve was the navigator using his Tablet PC. 15 miles after we started, we ended up at exactly the same point we started at. Hence, my tip - the software is great, just don’t ever let Steve navigate, even if you do have a GPS receiver
On a more serious note, it is a great bit of kit - I should have bought one myself, although they’re quite expensive here in the UK. I thought about hooking it up to MapPoint and writing some macros to automatically recalculate the route, link it up to a speech engine and have “SatNav” on the cheap. I’m probably next over in the US there mid-year, and will be armed with a credit card so I may actually get round to trying this out.
