GM to make OnStar the standard by 2010

default — by TDavid @ 1:52 pm PST

Good news in the OnStar camp, as GM intends to make OnStar a standard feature in all new GM vechicles by 2010. Mike from Techdirt opines:

GM is going to make OnStar a standard feature in all vehicles to emphasizes how safe their vehicles are. This is amusing in a few ways. First, GM used to have the reputation of being anything but safe. However, more interesting, is the fact that OnStar was considered a failure during its first go around — mainly because GM didn’t focus on the safety aspects at all. Instead, they focused on the entertainment and information aspects. It was only once they focused on the safety side of things that people started buy it.

The Detroit Free Press article Mike quotes indicates that 60% of people continue to pay for the OnStar subscription after the first year. Ironically, my wife and I were discussing this last night as we drove by a Saturn billboard. We figure we are locked in to OnStar for at least the life of the loan (4 years) on our Relay. Not a bad thing, though, because we like OnStar. We have yet to talk to an OnStar customers who does not like them.

  1. Well the safety aspects are gone again… I was informed last evening that the service that I paid for religiously will no longer be available for my 2002 avalanche that I purchased for my family to travel in and be SAFE in case of accident or air bag deployment. It was advertised as a very comforting accessory and did make me feel safe knowing that my family could use at any time or in an emergency.

I’m very disappointed and am going to do all that I can to get this story spread so others will express theirs as well when they find out not only that the safety feature that GM advertised and sold to hundreds of thousands of their customers is now just buttons on the dash for kids to play with instead of possibly saving their lives.

I was told that it will not take effect until 2008 and they sent a discount voucher on the purchase of a new GM vehicle with DIGITAL onstar. They can KMA if they think I will ever purchase another GM vehicle let alone onstar which should have at least offered an update kit or fought with the FCC for All the vehicles that have been sold and will now be worthless.

Its just another case of the little person taking it up the rear and the government and corporate giants stomping on us when we are down and as we all know $$$$$$$$$$$$ so much for safety and resale values of the Giant Monster

Please pass this on to whoever you can. I’m going to notify my local news channels and have them investigate the local GM Dealers to get their response.

    Thank You.

    Lance
