WiFi in planes likely by 2006, but how much will it cost? |
How much will WiFi in airplanes cost? Passengers can already use the phones in planes but at four bones a minute that’s hardly making things available and accessible.
Once plans are completed and planes outfitted with the equipment, wireless high-speed Internet access might be found on commercial domestic flights by 2006, said Jack Blumenstein, chairman and CEO of Louisville, Colo.-based AirCell.
I was at an MSDN meeting yesterday and a one day pass for internet through the hotel was $10. I’m wondering when the day will be that WiFi is readily available at most or all technology meetings. It seems rather silly these days to offer any sort of technology meeting or conference and not offer WiFi.
As for airplanes, it’s a total no brainer that this should be a service offered as part of the flight. If people can upgrade to first class, then why not offer an optional WiFi package when buying tickets. Whatever they do, they better not make it some bogus fee like a couple dollars per minute to access.
