How to deal with (form) comment spammers |
If you run a blog and you don’t have some sort of spam protection in place, then chances are good that some form of comment spam is headed your way. Last night at this blog, we got back from the movie theater and I noticed a dozen plus different mechanized spam messages in the comments. Instead of just deleting and saying, “oh well, those bastards!” and becoming prey for them again, I decided to add a program that I wrote awhile back called Form Sentinel. The original use was to comment link list submission spam and my idea was to make it a 3rd party hosted tool. I never fully developed it for others usage, so now maybe I’ll be compelled to finish that project.
Bottom line: now anybody who leaves a comment at this blog has to go through the increasingly popular enter in the code from the graphic in order for the comment to go through. Sorry, for the extra hassle, I did make it so it was all uppercase letters which should cut down on the possible confusion when viewing the validation image. Sorry, spammers leave webmasters no choice! I have better things to do with my time than delete some idiot’s viagra or casino spam.
