New DVD format can store up to 1 Terabyte |
Who says size doesn’t matter? Not the MODS team (Multiplexed Optical Data Storage).
The development team said MODS can potentially store up to one terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) of data on one standard-size disc–enough for 472 hours of film, or every episode of the Simpsons. It would also have applications in enterprise data back-up and distribution.
Personally, I’m still holding out for holographic storage which will allow us to have movies on material the size of credit cards and have no moving parts. It’s easy to see where the breakdown is in the current model when there are moving parts. When the model moves to something with no moving parts, I wonder what kind of shift will happen in the harddrive sector.
Did this post make you go hmm?
