No more broken links someday

default — by TDavid @ 1:46 pm PST

We’ve all seen link checking programs, but how about a link checking program that automatically fixes the broken links? No, not fantasy, it’s called Peridot.

The web-based Peridot tool registers webpages - either on an intranet or on websites - and follows link targets to compare them to webpages it has previously seen. “The way we identify the content is through a process called fingerprinting which allows us to take representation of document like a fingerprint,” explained Andrew Flegg, IBM software developer and technical mentor for the Peridot team.

Of course they have rushed to patent the idea and therefore who knows if we’ll ever see this technology at a reasonable webmaster pricepoint, but it is an interesting concept. According to the article they’ve made it work with a 100,000 webpage prototype.
