Skype turns one and has 100,000 paid skype-out subscribers |
I will admit that I haven’t been keeping up as much on the Skype front as I have in day’s past. Stuart Henshall, on the other hand, has continued to keep a watchful eye via his blog the Unbound Spiral:
Belated Birthday wishes to Skype who just turned one. As I post this there are 625,000 users online. The numbers in Skype’s first year letter are interesting. Despite what Kevin Werbach says I think Skype is the largest effective VoIP network. The other IM systems still can’t substitute for a phone call.
Unsurprisingly, I am with Stuart who is a smart guy (I thought you were on a hiatus from blogging, Stuart?), Skype has always been something special. We have used it as an alternate way for listeners to connect to the weekly radio show I host. Unfortunately, not a lot of people utilyzed it for that purpose, but it worked rather well when we did run out that test. Also, I have noticed a few folks use it as an IM alternative to the often congested, bloated ICQ. Personally, I like it for the voice option, but then again, we are 90% Vonage enabled as well. VoIP is a great supplement, though not yet an entire replacement for the traditional phone system. If you do a search through this blog you’ll find all sorts of prior Skype entries.
Did this post make you go hmm?
