ePassporte fraud protection and FAQ |
I was just reading how ePassporte protects against fraud and thought this process was clever:
this is how it works: After you enter your debit or credit card information ePassporte will authorize a pending charge on that card for a random amount between USD$0.01 and USD$2.00. You will then be directed to contact your card issuing bank by calling the phone number on the back of the card or checking your online statement to find out the exact amount of the pending charge (Note: if contacting the bank by phone, please ask the bank representative for the ‘pending auth’ amount in U.S. dollars). Once you have done so, ePassporte will ask you to confirm the exact amount of the pending charge before it activates your ePassporte account. ePassporte requires you to do this in order to ensure that your credit card is not being used fraudulently.
Reading further into their FAQ page, these kind of practices, however, are odd:
When you use your Visa Electron card to make a fuel purchase at the pump, we will authorize your transaction for US $50, as we do not know how much fuel you intend to purchase. These authorizations are removed from your account when the actual fuel purchase amount is received from the gas station merchant, usually within 7 to 10 business days.
They don’t know how much you intend to purchase? This is more like a frequently unanswered question, I bet.

It’s not odd at all. That is a standard procedure. They don’t know how much gas you’re going to buy and assume it won’t be over $50. The approval amount is good up to that amount. Normally, it’s the gas station that determines the approval amount, though.
