Skype to go to release status in summer with SkypeOut paid service |
Skype is planning to leave beta “this summer” with the ability to call out … for a price. Light Reading:
Zennstrom told delegates at the VON Europe event that the Skype software would evolve from its current beta version this summer with the launch of Version 1. That would also be free, but users will be offered a pre-paid service called SkypeOut.
Zennstrom further goes on to say the price will be affordable and that people with traditional phone lines or cell phones being able to call Skype is still a ways off because there aren’t enough VoIP users. Yet. I’m one of them through Vonage as reported here before and I’m a satisfied Vonage user.

I read somewhere that 50% or higher of internet users access the internet through dial up. There are many areas of the US and many of the developing nations that just do not have any access to broadband. And I think that is what Vonage and skype were designed for.
Plus the fist go around with internet telephony, as I remember it, the sound quality was really bad. And it turned alot of uses off to tose sevices.
And if you are a dial-up user, why would you want to use skypeout, when you could just use your phone.

Skype sound quality is excellent and when I talk to people via Vonage nobody even realizes I am talking to them via VoIP, but we use cable and DSL, not dial-up. Dial-up users still are the issue, agreed. I doubt we’ll be buying the SkypeOut option because we already have unlimited calling via Vonage, but it might be a good backup option for situations where Vonage is down (like right at the moment, BTW). Vonage has had excellent uptime but today for some reason things are not good.
