So Far, High-Definition TV not producing anticipated sales

television — by TDavid @ 4:26 am PST

Those in the sporting biz were hoping that HDTV would bring back more fans but the still mostly too high price of HDTV (cheap no-name brands still cost around $500 USD) is keeping sales from TV viewers down. That and the fact that the economy still isn’t doing that well and the internet is stealing a lot of thunder from TV.

Washington Post (registration required):

Despite the creeping spread of high-definition television into homes across the United States, sports and television executives say it is increasingly apparent that HDTV is unlikely to be the ratings and revenue windfall they had thought a few years ago, when the first HDTV sets hit the stores. The Federal Communications Commission last year ordered the broadcast giants to completely switch from the old analog signal to digital by 2006.

With a broadband internet connection and streaming video gaining traction, TV as we know it is in trouble and it’s going to take more than widescale HDTV adoption to bring it around. There is some hope with the cable trend toward On Demand viewing and more and more people embracing PVRs (Personal Video Recorders like TiVO).
