Netflix to offer movie downloads in 2005 |
CNN Money is reporting that at some point in 2005 Netflix will be entering the Video On Demand (VOD) business:
Customers can now rent up to three DVDs at a time from Netflix for a set price with no late fees. Variety said the VOD offering will expand that to allow for up to three physical DVD or digital downloads at a time.
Will 2005 be too late? Also, will Netflix raise the monthly fee? Will Microsoft beat them to the punch since they are lining up a digital music store that will allow transferring to portable devices and also showed a mobile movie player at the CES in January 2004?
We just got VOD (On Demand) for cable and it rocks! Call your cable operator ASAP and see if On Demand is available in your area, because it was available in ours but we had to have them do a converter reset and download (which took about 30 minutes). How many times can you add something decent to your cable program for FREE (in our area On Demand doesn’t cost any extra, but I understand some companies may charge extra for the service which I think is lame, considering the already overpriced cost of cable programming). It is sort of like looking on your TiVO menu and having new stuff to watch. I especially like the fact that On Demand allows me access to programs that I don’t subscribe to like TechTV special segments and HBO specials, plus a couple dozen feature films. When we switched from DirecTV to Cable we didn’t get the extended package with TechTv in it. Also the fact that we can catch movies On Demand instead of waiting for TiVo to record them is sweet. I’m definitely stoked for VOD!
