Radio show #186: Search engines, internet radio past, present and future |
Today will be the 186th Friday that we’ve broadcasted the Script School “two hours of tech” radio show. We are looking into making some changes very soon to the format of the show. It’s not that I’m necessarily unhappy with the existing format, but I’ve felt for awhile that we needed to incorporate more learning opportunities into the format. Here’s some of the things we are kicking around — and will be kicking around on today’s show live at 2pm PST / 5pm EST:
- splitting the show into two one hour shows with one hour focusing on the technical side of business for the adult business (adult webmasters) and one hour dedicated to the mainstream technical side of the biz. This will open up one hour of the show to a younger audience where previously it hasn’t been an intended audience. I think it is good to learn coding early, and I did. This might also allow me to get my teenage sons involved in the mainstream hour of the show. Could be a good learning situation for them. My one son has shown an interest in webmastering and I could work with him live on the air for a community based website. I think it might be beneficial for others to hear and also be a good way to give something back to the local community.
- adding a live CGI or PHP script and/or program installation, step-by-step, at least once per month to the show, preferably helping a webmaster who has never completed the installation before. This would help those who would like to learn more about how to install CGI or PHP scripts, providing a real world experience.
- blog the before and after for the radio show(s). Add commentary and information about each of the shows, preparation for the weekly shows and additional behind the scenes information. We’ve actually started doing this in preparation for offering content for a special VIP area. This way those who want to learn more about a specific topic or show can get this extra in-depth information plus learn how and what goes into putting together the program. Also, two hours is not nearly enough time for most of the topics we cover, so this would help those who are interested learn more.
- make available MP3 and possibly lossless format (FLAC) files of the shows. For quite some time, actually, I’ve wanted to offer the shows in a higher quality format for download locally and listening for students, but at the same time we don’t want to get killed by the bandwith. Bit torrent looks like an attractive possibility to me, and also the option/possibility of distributing through a VIP-only area for a small monthly or yearly fee.
- special content in an exclusive VIP area. While the adult-oriented show has advertiserss, the proposed mainstream show would not have any commercials or advertising, at least in the beginning (if anybody reading this is interested in sponsoring this show, please contact me), so this special area would help the site make enough money to cover the expenses and give us a few bucks for contests, promotions, staffing and advertising the shows and website. There would actually be two separate VIP areas — one for each show and respective website.
This list isn’t complete, but it’s a few of the ideas being kicked around. Would appreciate any comments on these ideas so we can make the show more informational and entertaining. I believe it is possible to have an entertaining and informational radio show.
