Desert terrain foils robotic racers |
Thirteen robot vehicles, guided by infrared sensors, competed in a race sponsored by the Pentagon’s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) which offered one million dollars for any robot vehicle that could complete the course:
But most of the vehicles, which included modified Humvees, pickup trucks and dune buggies, broke down within sight of the starting line near Barstow, California, and none travelled more than 11km.
They should have hooked up with some of the badass vehicles in Robot Wars. The goal of the project is that someday these fully fully autonomous vehicles could run missions into war zones without risking the lives of US soldiers.
Did this post make you go hmm?
