Syndicated TV shows on the way out? |
I wonder about the future of TV syndication with this rage of DVD sales. This coming Tuesday the first season of Gilligan’s Island is coming to DVD. Last week season one of Barney Miller came out (among some other blasts from the past) and it seems practically every new show is being pressed and pumped out on DVD these days. Again, I wonder if this means that the days of reruns will go the way of the dinosaur someday? I mean, what will TV show if everybody has it in their personal library or can stream it from the web on demand? This is a long ways off, but it’s something I’ve been thinking of. The Gilligan’s Island fan club is here, BTW.
Did this post make you go hmm?

I don’t think that reruns will stop. The advent of DVD and VHS didn’t kill off movie channels. Also, there’s just too much time to fill on the airwaves to not go to the rerun well.

What with the (seemingly) explosive growth of DVD and Internet broadband VOD (Video-on-demand) technology, putting all our favorite classic shows right at our fingertips in our living rooms and on our desktop and laptop PC’s, and freeing up all that extra airtime on local broadcast stations, just what IS left for TV to show nowdays? IMHO, the answer is simple…INFOMERCIALS…back-to-back INFOMERCIALS! Either THAT, or…REALITY-BASED TALK SHOWS! That, I think, is terrestrial (non-cable/satellite) broadcast TV’s REAL future! <:-o
