Complimentary comment spammers |
What’s with this new wave of blog spammers that are using complimentary comments to spam their websites? I really have to wonder about some brainchild sitting at the spam throne thinking: OK, I got it, let’s send a bot out that says things like: “great site, thanks” or “I agree entirely”. Then there is the one or two word brilliant spams like: “Cool” and ”Well done.”
Egos aside, the odds are if one receives some flowery comment on his/her blog without any substance relative to the entry and there is a link back to a website then you can pretty much guarantee it’s complimentary comment spam. Don’t need an 8-ball for verification or a call to Miss Cleo, just make the move for the delete function and waste ten seconds of life.
Are most blogs in 2004 going to go to a system of moderating comments before posting or membership only? Or will it continue to be the process of letting the bots run rampant and then having to ban the IP (which can be changed or run through a proxy and masked). Fuck you, comment spammers, fuck all of you spammers, because you have sullied up most forms of interaction and communication on the web. Email is practically worthless, unless multiple forms of filtering and utilities are used. About the only thing spammers haven’t screwed up yet is RSS, but I’m guessing that somehow, someway some rocket scientist spammer will figure out how to bend this over too.
All this on the heels of news that AOL’s lawsuit against bulk spammers has met a roadblock by the courts.
Now on the matter of a living, breathing human being, stopping by and reading any entry and making a relevant comment and then leaving a link, hey that’s cool, but enough of the cut and run comment BS. The problem is this rant is totally preaching to the choir. 99.9% of those actually reading this are not comment spammers, nor especially the new ingrades known as complimentary comment spammers.
Ahh, I feel better now. Now who wants to wager over whether some asshole will spam this too?

On a side note watch the roads tonight if you are going out for New Year’s Eve. Lots of idiots will be driving under the influence tonight unfortunately.
Did this post make you go hmm?
