Nihilism - Our New Ethos? |
The Death Culture
The more attention I pay to what is going on in our society lately, the more I notice it’s fixation with Death. It seems to me that we are sinking ever deeper into a nihilistic culture. What’s so exciting about Death? What gives? Have we swallowed the Death Diet so deeply that we really believe that Death is the magic that will solve all our problems?
We live under the constant threat of Nuclear annihilation… because we ‘use’ the threat of Nuclear Death to intimidate and control. Now we apply Death liberally, without much consideration or debate, to ’solve’ our political problems with ‘other’ Human Beings living elsewhere on Earth… to solve our oil supply ‘needs’, and our desires for everything from Diamonds to Glass. We even use Death to solve our personal problems - ‘Party till You Die’ - as though all You have to do is endure awhile and Death will fix whatever ails You. We apply the ’solution’ of the Death ‘penalty’ - but, it seems to me that whatever example is set, that is what the people will follow… If our society says that Death is the way to solve a problem, then I guess that’s very instructive to all the aspiring murderers out there… at least until they ‘learn their lesson’. Seems to me they will, and soon will be instructive to others.
We’re now living, or at least existing in a Death trap of our own making. We’ve even been applying Death to the Environment, in the pursuit of ‘jobs’ - pouring out Pollution, cutting the Forests, screening the Seas of Life… and how long will it be before the Environment Dies - and our species with it? We currently serve Death to over 1 Million innocent Animals via ‘Road Kill’ every day. This culture calls ‘hunting’ and ‘fishing’ - the intentional application of Death to the defenseless - fun. It even encourages citizens to eat Death, to engage in an act of mass carnage, presented as the neatly packaged carcasses and parts of Billions of Dead Animals - and be numb to all the Pain it entails.
Can we survive a Death culture? Will we succumb to the accompanying depression, too feeble to answer this cloud? What has made Life so bad that we seem to prefer Death? What evil has seeped into our collective consciousness to make us this way? What ‘bargain’ have we struck?
What ever happened to the idea that Life is about Life? About better futures? About something to Live for, not Die for. Something has been silently stolen from us, something that makes Life worth Living.
The reason for Life was once Life itself.
