First spam in comments

default — by TDavid @ 11:39 am PST

Well it took a whopping 4 months, 18 days for this blog to finally recieve its first porn spam. Wouldn’t you know it would be for male endowment pills: I think that penis enlargement pills do work!!! My boyfriend has tried them and he’s a new person since than. The confidence…, the courage!!! Well sorry, “Lizz” … I mean really, how many women named Liz have two “z”’s in their name? Thin “Lizz”y is a band of guys. Yeah, right. Lame.

Update: (after I posted this) ”Lizz” writes in the comments: <i>Sorry for disturbing you</i>

The funny thing, “Lizz”, the only thing that disturbed me was that your comment wasn’t in a relative place and you ignored the fact that you can comment on pretty much anything here (as you just did) and put your link in the “link” column. Actually, I don’t have a problem with adult entertainment or people/webmasters who use and/or promote penis pills. The problem that I have is when people promote them in the wrong place. What does that have to do with the Penn State Napster deal? Zero. Not good for the readers of this blog (however few there might be) that they probably aren’t interested in the slightest in your bogus proclaimation of how good those pills worked for your “boyfriend”. If you want to comment here on relevant topics we’ll be happy to let your links to whatever affiliate program you are signed up to remain. I think this is fair. Good for you, good for the readers here. Now “Lizz”y Borden … wasn’t she the one with the axe?

Did this post make you go hmm?

  2. […] Update 11:09 PDT: As of 2pm ET, tech memeorandum just updated with the link from this blog to Scoble’s story as well as the other one questioned. This was after Warner Crocker trackbacked to the link for the iTunes 5.0 Windows (Warner didn’t actually add a link to his blog to my blog entry though). He commented too on the post. This experiment resulted in an approximately three hour delay between the original link and showing up on tech.memeorandum. The link showed up in a prominent location when it did show up. […]

  3. […] It’s the 19th of September and still no follow-up to the Feedster August Top 500 list. When I remarked at the end of August that in a few days we’d be seeing a new list, Feedster CEO, Scott Rafer, was quick to show up in the comments area to correct me: Our list iterations will come out mid-month, as the first one did, not at the first of the month. We’ll get into a predictable and disclosed rhythm as soon as we can. […]

  4. […] I’ve been pretty happy with the comments left on this blog overall. Don’t think this blog would be the quite the same without the comments, as readers sometimes help to educate me about things I might have missed and/or overlooked. Sometimes the tone of these notifications can be a bit harsh like Julie correcting me earlier today that Nintendogs do, in fact, poop: “they DO take a crap u idiots. They dont always pee. And, when they poop, its like a little brown pellet. U jus click on it, and its gone.” […]

  5. […] Speaking of readers leaving comments to inform me of something I might have missed/overlooked (see last post), Mark from Pubsub stopped by to leave a comment earlier today in my Feedster top 500 post (risky move, Mark) about PubSub LinkRanks news: We just slipped out a daily version of the PubSub 1000. That is, we now calculate and publish a list of the top 1000 sites based on LinkRanks on a nightly basis. Please see http://www.pubsub.com/linkranks1000.php . btw, you can now grab the entire 1000 site list as an atom feed. […]

  6. […] 1) I was curious what was happening with the Feedster Top 500 list for September. CEO Scott Rafer had posted here to tell me last month that it would be coming out the middle of September. I was curious and was following up. 2) I posted my question because it was getting late in the month and mentioned another nagging, frankly more important, issue that I hadn’t been able to resolve with Feedster’s icon upload function. 3) Nobody from Feedster commented on the blog entry, but I *did* receive a private email literally within hours of the somewhat unflattering post and got assistance from Feedster in fixing the issue. 4) I was (rightfully) corrected by Randy Charles Morin that Feedster had already announced on their blog that there would be no Top 500 list for September. I should have looked there first for the news. My bad, there. Sorry, Feedster. 5) Mark from Pubsub stops by to spam us in the same thread about the new LinkRanks at PubSub features that they “slipped out today” in this same Feedster thread. What exactly does this have to do with Feedster or my icon upload issue? Unrelated, unsolicited and tacky. Spam, Mr. Wyman, spam. 6) I debated privately emailing Mark and CC’ing Mr. Wyman about how tacky this activity was and decided instead to follow Mark’s request and check out and let them know exactly what I thought of PubSub’s new features. In detail. 7) I posted an update on the blog entry indicating and thanking Feedster and the person who helped me for the issue, Sheldon. Thank you again, Sheldon, much appreciated. The Feedster thread and issue is resolved. 8) I didn’t tag or submit to Digg, Slashdot, etc or try to create any additional exposure for this post beyond what was written. […]

  7. […] - a comment that only contains a link, unless the link is to a blog entry that expands specifically on the thread and the article/blog entry links back to Hmm. This is probably best done with a trackback. - comments that say: hey check this out, or some variation, and include a link. Yes, there are exceptions where these posts can be approved as noted above. When they are from somebody who represents a competing company, such as the case that happened here, and then received the response here. - one way trackbacks. Trackbacks that come from third party sites which write about the topic generally but do not link back to Hmm. In very rare instances when we feel the content is outstanding we will approve these trackbacks, but otherwise these are deleted. - comments containing known spam keywords. There are a half-dozen or so keywords which are blacklisted from the comments area. They are keywords very common to comment spam and extremely uncommon to legitimate comments. Yes, we do realize some false positives may result here. If you left a legitimate comment and it didn’t show up as being approved, then please email that comment to tdavid at gmail dot com and we’ll add it for you manually. We aren’t trying to stop legitimate, relevant comments. Yes, even those that strongly oppose or disagree with something published at Hmm. - comments which bring nothing of value to the discussion. Yeah, this is very subjective. If you want to ANONymously tell me how much of an asshat you think I am or how stupid this blog is then use your own blog and then trackback in. We’ll be much more likely to let that type of commentary passthru then a snappy ANON one liner. Still, there are exceptions and we do let some of these type comments through. Particularly if they made us laugh. We’re suckers for good humor and biting satire. […]

  8. […] A few days ago I wrote about looking forward to the update of The Poseidon Adventure which aired as a three hour made for TV movie on NBC last night and to my surprise the screenwriter, Bryce Zabel, showed up in the comments area of this blog. How about that, the screenwriter of an NBC movie is a blogger? And Zabel isn’t one of those bloggers just jumping on the PR wagon to promote the movie he penned, he has been blogging for awhile via TypePad. Cool! […]
