LIVE TV on your SprintPCS cell phone |
It is now possible and “easy” to get live TV … if you have SprintPCS, one of the 6 phones and are willing to shell out $9.95/month. I was excited to check this MobiTV out at first thinking that it would work with my A600 since I read the PC World article that incorrectly stated it would. It does apparently work with the Samsung A620/VGA1000 phone though, which is a bit vexing since that phone was released about the same time as the A600, is less expensive ($259 vs. $350 USD), and doesn’t have the cool swivel viewfinder. I noticed that many of the newer, more expensive phones weren’t supported yet. One would think that if you spend more money you’ll have more accessibility, not less, but enough of my whining (somebody get me some cheese!) Those of you are in business if you have the Sanyo 5400, 5500, 7200 or 8100 and PCS Vision service.

Now as for the subject of whether anybody would want to watch TV on their cellphone, I am not sure. I just wanted to get a month of it to see what it looked like on my phone. Doubtful that the quality will be all that good at the onset, but as with any other technology it will get better; I want to see it! (is my cell phone envy showing?) MobiTV offers a feedback form to tell them you’d like the service available for your phone. I’m there.
If you happen to have personally checked out this service or know/witnessed somebody who has, then drop me a comment or trackback your experience with this service because I’m curious. I did a little searching in the blogosphere already, but I’m sure there’s much more out there of interest on this subject.

Did this post make you go hmm?

It’s great for the long delays at the airport. People really wonder why someone is staring at a cell phone (especially my blue Sanyo 7200) for long periods of time. If they are close enough they can hear the sound coming from the speakerphone. It does draw a crowd.

[…] I first heard about MobiTV nearly two years ago in November 2003 and contemplated checking it out — but never did. […]
